Why Do Dogs Bark?

All dogs bark, plain and simple, but some bark more than others for no particular reason. How do we stop it and what is the cause for this super annoying habit?

In order to fix this problem, we first need to understand that all dogs bark just like all children cry. Many owners give up at the very start and don't even attempt to try and find out what might be making their pup act this way. Doggy parents think that when they command their dog to "STOP", they are going to listen right away simply "just because". Some don't even try and just continue to wonder "how to get a dog to stop barking" and never do anything but yell and get frustrated. That is their first mistake! Maybe the dog is also tired of trying to let you know something is bothering them or they are excited about something! How does your dog let you know? Well often he barks…. duhh!!

How To Stop Dogs From Barking

One of the common reasons why many dogs bark is because they are ALERT BARKING, most common when they hear a noise outside. When they hear certain sounds, they feel as if they need to alert you that something might be going on. Funny fact, 90% of the time they are probably just barking at nonsense, but since it's in their nature, they will alert you anyway. One way to remedy this is to try and find ways to block the sounds coming from outside. You can turn on the TV, the radio, or even power on the fan to shield the noises when they begin to bark. This is a common solution but it is not the best way on how to train a dog to stop barking. That is not really training, instead it's just temporarily addressing the issue.

A better solution is a CUE WORD. Your cue word should be something like "SHHH" or "Quiet" or "Hey Settle Down" in a calm friendly voice followed by a treat as soon as they are quiet. Often times you will experience your puppy barking for just about anything and everything. When you find yourself in a situation where you dog is barking excessively for no good reason, you should draw all their attention to you and use the cue word as we just explained. After a few instances your dog will begin to pick up on the cue, he will recognize that the cue word followed by no more barking from him will result in a treat. Eventually, this will be as second nature to them as the barking.

Investing the time in properly training your dog from right versus wrong behavior is the long term solution to fixing the problem versus masking the problem with anti barking devices. Even the most expensive and best bark collars on the market won't "train” your dog on right versus wrong instances to bark at. However, it is important to keep in mind that you won't be able to completely eliminate the barking forever regardless the method you choose, that would be crazy. Barking is part of a dog's biological nature just as humans talk to communicate, imagine someone telling you to never talk again, not fun right? You will however be able to train them and let them know when it's time to settle down on command because the certain situation or environment does not call for excessive barking. Some dogs will always bark at the sound of the garbage truck passing by, police sirens, ambulances, cars honking, doorbell ring, visitor's door knock and just about any noise that is a trigger for them. Once you condition them with the cue word or phrase it will be easier to get them to stop the barking for the moment.

Another solution that will help you on how to stop your dog from barking is to eliminate the triggers if possible. Sometimes there are things that we can actually control which will aide in getting your dog to settle down. One example is closing the blinds if you have one of those dogs that likes to hang out by the window barking at everything in sight. If you walk over to the window and shut the blinds or pull the curtains together, your dog won't be able to see these triggers. Right before he stops barking make sure to use the cue word and give em a treat, again this is you conditioning your dog in these situations, eventually he will catch on and it won't be such a huge problem anymore.

Another great solution is to acclimate your dog to the sounds and sights that trigger the barking. You should work on creating a positive association with these sights and sounds that get your dog to bark. A really great and common situation as an example of this is when a dog barks because someone is walking past the house. This is an annoying habit because you will usually be forced to keep your blinds shut since your dog will probably bark the entire time the blinds are open if you get a lot of foot traffic in front of the house. To help remedy this you should immediately use a cue word and give them a treat as soon as your dog notices a person walking by, but before they start barking. Your cue word or phrase can be something like "yeah someone's walking by" in a very friendly voice.

Dog Training

Bringing home a new dog is never an easy task. Many owners bring home a dog without the proper knowledge or prior experience to know what this decision truly entails. Whether it's a small puppy with 0 sense of right and wrong, or an older dog who has been rehomed to a new location, this decision takes patience and dedication. A puppy needs to be trained as they have never had the chance to be taught right from wrong, and an older dog has previous habits that are unfamiliar to the new owner that need to be corrected to accommodate their new environment. A dog training bootcamp in your local area can cost anywhere from $1000-$3500 depending on the trainer and package chosen. This is a cost that not many people anticipate before getting the new dog home as well as a cost that not many can spare at that time.

Giving your new dog the proper education to make them understand their new environment is extremely important for your relationship and their stability in their new home. It's important to address the problems right away and correct them right from the start. A preferred method that many dog owners' resort to is the "Brain Training for Dogs D.I.Y Digital Dog Training Course", as it does not burn a hole in their pocket like a local dog obedience training coach would. As we mentioned a local trainer could cost over a thousand dollars, versus a digital course that you can learn the principals and skills to train your dog in every aspect for less than $100. A local trainer will teach your dog how to be obedient in the areas requested, but you will never have the knowledge to expand their training and address future issues that could arise. For instance, lets say that in a couple of years you move to a different "home", this new environment could be much different and have triggers that your dog was never exposed to at the prior home. These triggers now cause your dog to bark excessively at the new nearby kids walking home from school, or dig holes in the backyard. These are just a few examples of triggers that could cause potential issues in the future and you will have to enlist a professional trainer once again to address these new issues.

"Purchasing a digital course to train your dog yourself", gives you the knowledge you need to continue to course correct and address new issues as they arise in your dog. This will make the relationship and bond between the owner and dog less stressful and more appreciate from both parties.

The "Brain Training for Dogs" course is broken down into a series of education courses that cover everything from puppy training, potty training a puppy, aggressive dog training, how to stop dog crying/whining, chewing, jumping and so much more. The course was created by a CPDT-KA certified dog trainer and covers just about every topic you could encounter with a new dog so that you can refer to it when you need to course correct your dog for that behavior.

The Best Choice For You and Your Dog

In all, the main goal is to make sure that you and you dog both enjoy each other's companionship and environment. On average about 10% of adopted dogs get returned back to the shelter and risk the chance of being euthanized every year because the owner was not prepared to educate the dog in what their expectations are. As we mentioned earlier, bringing home a new dog, required patience and determination as well as time. Time to train your dog to meet your expectation so that both of you are having with each other. Dogs crave direction and always want to please their owner, by showing your dog the direction to take to please you, they will in return be happier and less problematic for you as their owner.
